Caceres to Seville
A very early start today and a walk to the station before the sun was up but the train journey from Caceres to Seville was well worth it. Our hotel had packed us a breakfast picnic so we could eat breakfast while watching the Spanish countryside go by. A very civilised way to travel!
We travelled on a single track line through the heart achingly beautiful Andalusian countryside complete with narrow ravines and olive groves occasionally passing remote villages on the way. A very nice way to spend 4 hours.
When we left the hotel this morning at 6am it was 6 degrees, upon arrival in Seville it was 30 degrees! We decided to try and reserve seats on the train to take us out of Spain later this month. This is proving to be a little difficult despite the fact we know there is a cross-border train from Barcelona to Paris. The ticket office was very busy and was operated on a ticket system (no pun intended!). After taking a ticket and waiting our turn we were told it was ‘NOT POSDIBLE’. Whilst we are loving Spain and will be sad to leave we do not want to be stuck here forever so a bit more research and a strong cup of coffee was needed. To cut a very long story short, we eventually managed to reserve our seats by ringing a very nice lady in The Netherlands. Now to explore Seville!
Seville is a very beautiful and bustling city but easily walkable and so we set off in search of things to see and photograph.
To name but a few:
Metropol Parasol (affectionately know as the mushroom)
The Toro del Oro (golden tower)
The Plaza de Espana
Barrio de Santa Cruz (old Jewish quarter) and our favourite place to wander and get lost.
Real Alcazar Palace
Barrio de Triana (old gypsy quarter)
All naturally interspersed with a little siesta and some delicious food.
The sunshine definitely shows everything in the best light and the temperatures have been in the low 30’s all weekend.
We are still trying to get our heads around timings for eating in Spain . When we are normally thinking of going to bed the Spanish are just getting started. The best approach is to bag a table around 7.30, order drinks, hold your nerve and wait until the first table cracks and orders food, anytime after 9pm! Having said that the food is delicious even if we are never quite sure what we are ordering.
Next stop Cadiz and a rendezvous with Cris and Jane
