Hanging by a Thread

Day 26 (Sunday)

We got up in the morning to the sounds of Piero’s mum knocking on our door and informing us that our room would be ready in 10 minutes so we repacked and decamped to our room at the top of the house (the attic).  Much better.

Spent the morning trying to get our bearings around the city.  Dubrovnik is one of the most ‘untouristy’ tourist cities we have ever been too.  There are no tacky signs anywhere, in fact there are no signs anywhere.  The best way to find your way around is to get to the Stradun (the main street) and veer off left and right.  There are steps everywhere, in the UK the town planners would have a field day putting ramps everywhere.

We eventually found ourselves in the port of the old town where we watched passengers of Costa Fascinosa being shuttled to and from the mother ship.

Day 27 (Monday)

We had more of a ‘touristy day’ today.  We did the walk around the walls of Dubrovnik in the morning which we probably should have done yesterday as would have helped us find our way around.

Later in the afternoon we went to the top of Mount Srd (surge) in the cable care.  The cable car was destroyed during the war and has only recently been reopened.  It was well worth the trip as the views were amazing.  There was a ‘homeland war exhibition’ to have a look at which was very moving.  It’s almost impossible to believe it was only 20 years ago that we were watching the destruction of Dubrovnik on our evening news.  As the cable car runs until midnight we decided to stay a little longer to watch the night fall over the city and enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the restaurant which was surprisingly empty given its location.

We have learnt that in Croatia you really have to be your own travel agent as very few things are promoted or advertised, indeed there were no signs pointing to the cable cat at all.  It was an amazing end to a great day in Dubrovnik.

  1. I assume that last photo is a self portrait? If so its very good. How many attempts did you have?

    1. A geeky reply to the last comment. The Nikon D5100 has a flip screen which makes things slightly easier but it's still tricky to hold an SLR camera the wrong way round.
